The Wenner Gren Foundation Scholarship to South Africa for Anthropology Graduates

The Wadsworth African Fellowships are intended to provide support for African students undertaking study leading to a Ph.D. at a South African university that can provide them with international-level training in anthropology (including biological anthropology and archaeology). Currently applications to the University of Witwatersrand or The University of Cape Town are given priority.

The annual fellowship is $17,500 and can be used towards travel, living expenses, tuition, student fees, insurance, books, research expenses, and any other relevant categories of expenditure while studying at the Host institution. The fellowship is renewable for up to two additional years upon successful completion of each preceding year’s study. A separate application can be made for an additional year of funding to support dissertation write-up.

The deadline for the Wadsworth African Fellowship Program is December 15 and final decisions are made by January 15. Application materials are available 3 months before the application deadline. Applicants must use the most recent application form. They must also submit their application materials using the Foundation’s online submission procedure as well as send two printed copies to the Foundation by regular mail. IFP / Ford Foundation Scholarship for Nigerian Graduates 2010

The International Fellowships Program (IFP) is a program supported by the Ford Foundation, and coordinated in West Africa by the AAU in collaboration with Pathfinder International in Nigeria and the West African Research Center (WARC) in Senegal. IFP provides fellowships for advanced study to exceptional individuals who will use their education to further development in their own countries and greater social and economic justice worldwide. IFP fellowships will be awarded to applicants from diverse backgrounds, including social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education.

A total of 136 fellows have been recruited into the Nigeria program since 2001 when support for the program first started. Eighty-eight fellows have completed the program. Some fellows have returned to their previous work in government, universities, and with NGOs, while others are now working in rural communities.

It is expected that 57 Fellowships will be awarded in West Africa for the 2011/2012 academic year.

Deadline for applications is Friday, January 29, 2010. Late application and non-current forms will not be accepted. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted in April 2010. Individual communication will not be entertained. Selection decisions are final.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must:
Be residents or resident nationals of Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal.
Hold a Bachelor’s or equivalent as the case may be.
Have at least 3 years of work experience.
Have substantial experience in community service or development-related activities.
Possess leadership qualities/potential evidenced by their employment, academic experience, or at the community level.
Propose to pursue a Master’s degree that will directly enhance their leadership capacity in a practical, policy, academic, or artistic discipline or field corresponding to one or more of the Foundation’s areas of endeavor.
Present a plan specifying how they will apply their studies to social problems or issues in their country.
Commit themselves to working on these issues following the Fellowship.
Communications/Fine Arts MUST submit writing/work samples.

The Charles Pick Fellowship for Writers… 2010

The Charles Pick Fellowship is dedicated to the memory of the distinguished publisher and literary agent, Charles Pick, whose career began in 1933 and continued until shortly before his death in January 2000. He encouraged young writers at the start of their careers with introductions to other writers and practical and financial help. The Fellowship seeks to continue this spirit of encouragement by giving support to the work of a new and, as yet, unpublished writer of fictional or non-fictional prose. Its purpose is to give promising writers time to devote to the development of his/her talents. The Fellowship will be for six months, starting on 1 September. The award is £10,000.
