Scholarship: DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree a chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. Scholarships are open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia and from countries in the Middle East. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or in English. Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months. It means the scholarship holders will have to arrive in Germany 6 months earlier before the Master course begins as it is a part of the scholarship. This also applies to the scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English.

Eligibility

• Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.
• For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taught in English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.

• Hertie School of Governance, Berlin: Master of Public Policy (MPP)
• University of Duisburg-Essen: MA Development and Governance.

Important application papers to be submitted include:

• DAAD application form for research grants and study scholarships
• Motivation Letter containing a  precise description of the applicant’s academic / professional and personal reasons for wishing to participate in the programme
• Full Curriculum Vitae including  information about precise field of study and, if applicable, description of job experience
• Recent language certificates giving evidence of your level of proficiency in English (TOEFL,  IELTS) and if applicable in German.
• Two letters of recommendation by university professors and/or current or former employers
• Officially authenticated copies of all certificates.

Call for Application: Youth Xchange Programme, Age 18 – 25

Youth Xchange is part of Global Xchange programme which aims to support the development of active global citizens, committed to working for positive change.

Youth Xchange is an exchange programme that brings young people from the UK and from other countries to live alongside each other and work together as volunteers so they can share their learning with their host communities. Developed out of a highly successful VSO exchange programme called ‘World Youth’, Youth Xchange seeks to support the advancement of a global perspective among young people. The programme is a partnership between, British Council, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and Education as a Vaccine (EVA) as implementing partner.

Youth Xchange works with teams of up to 18 young people (aged 18-25). Equal numbers come from the UK and from the overseas partner country, Nigeria. The participants Xchange works with teams of up to 18 young people (aged 18-25), with equal numbers coming from the UK and from an overseas partner are recruited, and the teams are formed, to reflect diversity in terms of geography, ethnicity, ability, education and gender. Together, in cross-cultural counterpart pairs, they live with host families and work in host communities, for up to 3 months in the UK and 3 months in the overseas country, Nigeria. They also work on a global citizenship project specifically aimed at raising awareness of development and diversity within their host communities 

We are inviting applications from individuals interested in participating in the Youth Xchange project due to commence in October 2011.  Interested applicants must have the following: 

• A positive and realistic commitment to the programme
• A genuine commitment to learning
• Ability to solve problems
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Self confidence
• Ability to work with others in a team
• Sensitivity to the needs of others

In addition they must be able to:

·       Treat everyone equally and with respect, regardless of any difference

·       Abide by and respect all the laws, both of the UK and of the overseas country 

·       Abide by all the rules and regulations established by the Programme to protect their health and safety

·       Always stay within host communities unless they have prior agreement from their Project Supervisor

·       Respect the customs and cultures of host communities and specifically their host Families

·       Take part in all the activities and phases of the Programme, including pre-departure ,preparation and returned volunteers events

·       Fundraise some money as part of their contribution and commitment to the program

Participants (volunteers) must be sure that they can cope with the above standards of behavior before they apply for the program.

fellowship program in social sciences for emerging academics

The Carnegie Corporation of New York is supporting a new fellowship program in social sciences for emerging academics in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The program has been designed, and is being administered by, the Social Science Research Council for an initial two-year period with the possibility of renewal.

The research theme for the program is peace, security, and development, broadly defined.

Three levels of fellowships are on offer, all for doctoral work:

• dissertation proposal development (e.g. pre-testing a survey instrument or interview protocol);
• doctoral research (e.g., to enable fieldwork); and
• dissertation writing.

Fellowships are open on a competitive basis to African scholars without PhDs and who are affiliated with a university in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Because of the Corporation’s emphasis on developing and retaining the next generation of African academics, priority will be given to applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to a career in teaching and research in the continent.

Diversity is prized, and women are especially encouraged to apply.

Application deadline for the first round of fellowships is 31 August 2011.

British Chevening Scholarship 2011

BRITISH CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications are now invited from suitably qualified candidates for the 2011/2012 British Chevening Scholarship Awards. These awards, tenable for a maximum period of twelve months, are for postgraduate study at a UK university and are valid for the academic year commencing in September, 2011.

 

Each year, under the British Chevening Scholarship Scheme, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office funds a limited number of postgraduate training awards. The aim of the Scheme is to contribute to the political, economic and social development of Nigeria. The Scheme is designed to benefit the country’s future leaders and opinion formers.

 

It is specifically intended for highly motivated younger professionals with a proven track record of outstanding achievement. Applicants will have already demonstrated the potential to make a significant impact on the future of Nigeria.

 

Applications will only be considered from candidates who:

have an upper-second or first-class degree;

have an outstanding career record to date;

 

We are particularly interested in candidates whose future career plans involve work that will support one or more of the objectives of the scheme.
